KARACHI: City Mayor Wasim Akhtar approved on Friday payment of over Rs20 million for immediate disbursement of salary and pension of Christian employees of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation before Christmas.
He also announced that the children belonging to the minority community would get free entry to the Karachi Zoo on the occasion of their religious festival.
The mayor was speaking to a delegation of elected representatives from the Christian community who called on him at his office seeking payment of salary and pension to Christian staff of the city’s municipal administration.
The delegation also discussed issues pertaining to cleanliness, water and sewerage system in their areas.
It informed the mayor about the problems being faced by them in different Christian localities and asked him to bring improvement in sanitation and security conditions especially around the main churches.
The mayor said that KMC would fulfil its responsibilities in connection with the provision of municipal facilities to the Christian community on Christmas to enable them to celebrate their religious festival in a better manner. He said minorities had equal rights in Pakistan.
“All governmental organisations will ensure that the minority community is provided with all necessary facilities on their festival,” he added.
The mayor said that development scheme would be prepared for Essa Nagri so that roads and sewerage problems in that area could be resolved on a permanent basis.
He said that the KMC would in coordination with district municipal administration make all arrangements for cleanliness and lighting in areas where the Christian community members resided.
He also directed that PC-1 be prepared for developing a park in union council-5.
The mayor said that he, district municipal chairmen and other elected representatives would visit churches on Christmas to wish the Christian community and to show unity with them.
